Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance (often just called "A&A") is one of the most under-used benefits available to wartime veterans and their surviving spouses — many families who qualify never apply simply because they don't know it exists.
What It Is
Aid and Attendance is an increased monthly benefit added on top of the VA Improved Pension for veterans (or surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities — bathing, dressing, eating, or managing medication — or who are bedridden, in a nursing home, or significantly visually impaired. It's not a standalone program; it requires qualifying for the underlying VA pension first.
Who Generally Qualifies
In broad terms: the veteran needs to have served during a wartime period with an honorable discharge, and meet the VA's income and net worth limits for the pension. On top of that, a physician's statement or VA examination needs to document the need for aid and attendance. The specific service-period dates, income thresholds, and documentation requirements are set by the VA and do change — the accurate, current numbers for your situation come from the VA or an accredited veterans service officer, not a general article.
How to Apply
The application goes through the VA — typically VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance) filed alongside a pension claim. Many veterans work with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) — often free through county veterans services offices or organizations like the VFW or DAV — to prepare the paperwork correctly. Processing can take months, so it's worth starting the application as soon as a need is identified rather than waiting until care is urgently needed.
Using the Benefit for Home Care
Once approved, the Aid and Attendance payment goes to the veteran or surviving spouse as part of their monthly pension — it's not paid directly to a care provider. That means the money can be used flexibly toward in-home care costs, including a private-pay non-medical home care agency. If you're a veteran or surviving spouse working through this process, we're happy to talk through how the benefit could apply once it's approved — just call the number for your county.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Red Hill Home Care bill the VA directly for Aid and Attendance?
No — the benefit pays the veteran or surviving spouse as part of their monthly pension, not a care provider directly. Red Hill is private-pay; the family uses the pension payment flexibly, including toward private-pay care.
How long does VA Aid and Attendance approval typically take?
Processing can take months, which is why it's worth starting the application as soon as a need is identified rather than waiting until care is urgently needed.
